30. Oktober | 6:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m.

Lesung: Robert Šoko & Robert Rigney – Balkan Beats – An Oral History

So einiges!

Reading & Event: Robert Šoko & Robert Rigney – Balkan Beats – An Oral History

To mark the closing of our exhibition „Šokiraš me, majke mi!“ on the 1980s Sarajevo rock scene, we turn our attention to another genre born in Berlin 30 years ago: Balkan Beats.

You might wonder: What does the brass-heavy electronic club music associated with Balkan Beats have to do with rock and punk? Quite a lot!

In their book, Robert Šoko and Robert Rigney chronicle this vibrant and chaotic cultural uprising. Written with wit, emotion, and authenticity, it captures a scene that dared to be „the new punk“—standing as the first global pop phenomenon to travel from East to West. Concocted in Berlin underground clubs and free from music industry mechanisms, the sound quickly spilled over to venues in America and Japan, propelling Robert Šoko and his hybrid blend of raw brass energy and urban edge to global dance-floor fame. BalkanBeats became the soundtrack of choice for a generation searching for something real, sweaty, and soulful, untouched by corporate formulas.
